The Western Cape Grabouw / Elgin region was a buzz of activity from Friday 3 November to Sunday 5 November 2023 with the launch of thrilling of this annual outdoor and adventure event. The Overberg region and its beautiful people, the farmers of Elgin, the businesses and residents welcomed inaugural Outdoor and Overland Expo and visitors from afar with open arms. This exciting new event is described by visitors and exhibitors alike as a roaring success.
The event, highlighted by the beautiful backdrop of the Overberg mountains, was a first for Grabouw and the Elgin Sports / Country Club. The exhibitor arena was on the club’s cricket field and surrounds, bordering the shores of the Eikenhof Dam. “We unfortunately had to cancel all 4x4 activities and demonstrations planned for this years’ event due to the recent devastating floods. We are, however, grateful to have hosted the event at this stunning venue. Half the cricket field was still under water three weeks before the event! We trust to add the 4x4 activities, vehicle and off-road caravan and trailer demonstrations as well as other exciting adventure activities to the event for 2024 and beyond,” said André Verster, the owner of the event.
Day visitors, including seasoned travelers and families new to outdoor adventures, were treated to outdoor living gear, overland vehicles, 4×4 fitment specialists, caravans and off-road trailers as well camping accessories suited to everyone planning to explore not only South Africa, but the African continent and beyond.
Another highlight for day visitors were the YouTube sensation Grizzly N Bear team Steph and Leigh, who travel across the globe in their locally re-built Land Rover Defender. They astonished visitors with their adventures of living the life others dream of.
Apart from a variety of food stalls – and even a wood-fired pizza oven as well as two stalls selling bean-to-cup coffee – the exhibitor arena boasted a large beer tent where the visitors were able to indulge in some drinks, local wine and cheese tasting, craft beer and locally-produced gin. Visitors were enthralled by other stalls ranging from hand-stitched leather footwear to knives and blades, re-usable fire starters, fire pits, TrailerWorm, FlexoPower to mention just a few.
The Xpo is a family-orientated event, and dog-on-leash friendly. The kid’s entertainment area, boasting jumping castles, face painting, balloon figures, playball, snacks and drinks and lots more, was a great hit for the younger ones, who enjoyed it free of charge. The entertainment area also included caretakers, allowing the parents to take a break themselves.
“The expo was a huge success! We will definitely be back in November next year at the same venue of the Elgin Sports / Country Club from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 November 2024. Bigger, better, more to see and experience, and with added adventure activities. See you next year!” says André.
